RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Gov. Pat McCrory is heading to western North Carolina to visit schoolchildren and get input from small-town locals about priorities early in his term.

McCrory was scheduled Friday to read to students at an elementary school in Flat Rock. His book choice is from Dr. Seuss. The late author's birthday is Saturday, and the reading coincides with what's called national Read Across America Day.

The governor was scheduled later to visit a hardware store in Black Mountain, the next stop in what's being called his Main Street tours. He's said he wants to work to revitalize small towns.

McCrory spent Thursday night at the Governor's Western Residence in Asheville.
