CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hundreds started their day at the Symphony park at South Park Mall in south Charlotte Monday paying tribute to service men and women who gave their all for their country.

It s important to remember those who've fallen and freedom isn't free, said Dana Bradley of Patriot Charities.

The annual Patriot 5K run called Go the extra Mile had more than 700 participants run and walk-- many of whom did so in honor of someone who served in the military.

The purpose of the Patriot Charities is to raise funds to financially assist non-profit organizations and local programs within the Carolinas concerned with the immediate welfare, care and support of our wounded military and their families.

Proceeds will go, in part, to projects like the construction of five houses that will be given to wounded military personnel.

People are aware of the great sacrifices the men and woman have made and they're coming and supporting us in droves. said Bradley
