CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More than a thousand women and men took to the streets of Charlotte Saturday morning for the second day of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

This is the 11th year that Avon has held the Walk which raises money and awareness for breast cancer research. It s the 9th year that the Charlotte has been one of number cities hosting the event.

Despite cold conditions, many of the walkers spent the night in Wellness Village located in Park Row Park.

Dozens of pink tents dotted the park s baseball fields.

Spending a night out in the cold in a tent... is the least I can do, said one of the participants.

I have friends who have been affected by breast cancer, I have a one in eight chance of getting it, she said.

Statics show that every three minutes someone will get breast cancer and many of the walkers wore pink ribbons to show this trend.

Since the start of the Avon Walk in Charlotte, the event has raised more than 18 million dollars and this year they expect to add more than $1.5 million dollars to that total.
