MILWAUKIE, Ore. -- Three kids fell through the ice at a Milwaukie pond Monday afternoon, prompting a search and rescue, officials said.

A caller reported thathe heard something like ice breaking and then someone screaming for help near the Minthorn North Natural Area at 11300 SE 37th Ave., according to Officer Ulrike Neitch of Milwaukie police.

When rescue crews arrived at the scene, they learned that five children were playing on the pond, Neitch said. Three fell into the water near the shore but were able to get out of the pond before crews arrived.

This is our best case scenario, said rescue swimmer Pat DeLair.

Water is a dangerous thing to begin with, added Brandon Paxton of Clackamas Fire. Throw in these frigid temperatures on top of it and it becomes incredibly deadly very quickly.

All children were safe and accounted for Monday night, Neitch said.
