UNIONCOUNTY, N.C. -- Police say a 53-year-old man was caught in the act peeping into a woman's bedroom window near Wingate University.
Just yards from Wingate s Union county campus is a quiet cul-de-sac. It s all students, graduates and staff of the school living there.
I know most people in the cul-de-sac, we kind of look our for each other and know what s going on, said alumni Zach Wallace.
That's why word spread fast about what happened early Sunday morning
Matt Beatty told us, I heard there was a peeping tom, somebody peeking in the windows.
Police say a 23-year-old woman, a recent Wingate graduate, spotted the suspect, Worthell Taylor, 53, crouching outside her bedroom window.
Beatty said, She called the police immediately and they said go hide in your bathroom and we'll be there in a minute
Police were there in minutes and say they caught him in the act.
It always kind of gives you that jolt..is that in our neighborhood really? It happens all over the place.
It s the third incident near Wingate s campus in as many months. There were two lock-downs - one because of a double murder near the school.
That s part of the reason people here are grateful that just last month the school added some lights on what was a darker part of the campus.
Since I was a student here they've talked about those lights saying we need more so the university obviously listened and did that, Wallace remembers.
Taylor is charged with secret peeping.
Wingate University released the following statement Monday afternoon:
We understand that incidents like this can happen anywhere. We appreciate the Wingate Police Department's and Union County Sheriff's Office quick response in arresting an individual.
The safety and security of our campus community is our foremost concern.
