ANSON COUNTY, N.C. -- A deputy s 5-year-old son got hold of his father s service revolver and shot himself in the ear, according to the Anson County Sheriff s Office.

It happened at 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

The Sheriff s Office says the child fired one round and struck the top of his left ear.

The boy was taken to Levine s Children s Hospital in Charlotte. He is responsive and talking.

The deputy was not on duty at the time. He was the only one in the home at the time but was in another room.

The incident happened within the Wadesboro Police Department's jurisdiction; they will lead the investigation.

The Sheriff's Office has not released the deputy's name, but did say he is on administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation.

Right now we are trying to determine how the child got the weapon and managed to fire it. The deputy is very shaken by this incident to say the least. It appears from the initial medical report that the child will be fine. Our investigation, which will take several days, will determine what actions may be taken regarding the deputy in this matter. At this time the deputy is on administrative leave. Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen said.

The boy is expected to make a full recovery, and was back at school on Monday.

The Department of Social Services and the District Attorney's Office have both received a copy of the Sheriff's Office initial report on the incident.
