MONROE, N.C. -- Investigators say a man murdered his friend for his car and cash.
He was lured out to be robbed and that's what happened, said Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen, Jr.
Allen says 38-year-old Ervin Polk's murder looks like a setup from the beginning. He says Polk's friend, Eddie Ray Maye, called Polk several times earlier this week. Maye lived in Ansonville. Polk lived in Charlotte.
There were some phone calls between them just prior to him leaving his residence. So, we believe Maye called Polk and probably lured him to meet him somewhere up and around the Marshville-Wingate area, Allen said.
Polk drove a black Mercedes. Investigators say that car, plus Polk's wallet, is what Maye and his live-in girlfriend, Shuntia Cason, wanted. They are both charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit a felony.
After meeting up in Union County, they drove on Highway 74 toward Anson County, and then stopped on the side of the road.
That's when investigators say Maye and Cason shot Polk, took his cash and credit cards, stuffed Polk back into the Mercedes and dumped Polk's body along the side of Grassy Island and Stanback Ferry Roads near Ansonville.
Detectives say Maye and Cason tried to use Polk's debit card at an ATM after they killed him and stole his car. Deputies went to Maye and Cason's house and found Polk's Mercedes.
Maye ran into the woods. Deputies caught him hours later. Cason came home later that night to find deputies waiting for her.
I keep saying, 'I think I've seen it all. Nothing surprises me.' Then you run across something like this, Allen said.
Investigators say more arrests are possible. Polk worked at Charlotte Radiology.
