CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Peter Gorman announced his resignation during a news conference this afternoon.

I m moving on to be involved in education in a very different way, Gorman said.

He has accepted a position with News Corporation in a newly formed education division. Gorman will be named senior vice president and work with school districts to implement the division s programs, as well as review their integrity and effectiveness, according to a news release.

Gorman made the surprise announcement during a scheduled meeting to discuss budget cuts at the Government Center in uptown.

The budget challenges over the last three years have been incredibly difficult, but I truly believe the economic outlook is improving. I m please that the number of staff reduced for next year is less than originally expected.

Gorman s resignation is effective August 15, but he and his family will continue to be involved in the school system.

I ask you very simply one thing and that is to take good care of my daughter who will continue to be a student in the school district, Gorman said.

Gorman has been superintendent at CMS since July 2006. There are no formal plans in place for finding his replacement.
