SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (AP) -- One person has been killed after a police chase in Southern Pines.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the person was killed in a wreck on U.S. 15-501.

Southern Pines Police Chief John Letteney says an officer had pulled over a driver just before 11 p.m. Wednesday for erratic driving. Letteney said the driver sped away after stopping in the middle of the road.

The chief says the driver an off the left side of the road and struck an embankment, flipping the vehicle.

The driver was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating. The driver's name has not been released.
