CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Meteorologist John Wendel spent part of his day judging entries at the Regional Science and Engineering fair at UNC Charlotte.

John had his work cut out for him, more than 200 kids from third to twelfth grade competed.

We're interested in talking about the scientific method and engineering design, and really having the kids think critically about projects and doing good research, said Alisa Wickliff, the Science Fair Director.

The First Warn Storm Team presented Oliver Zerrillo with the WCNC Best in Weather Award.

Oliver will move on to compete at the state level.
