CINCINNATI (AP) -- A Florida company says it has an agreement to recover the remaining gold from a ship that sank off the coast of the Carolinas in 1857 in one of the worst maritime disasters in American history.

Tampa-based Odyssey Marine Exploration announced the agreement Monday to recover gold from the SS Central America.

If an Ohio judge approves the agreement, Odyssey Marine officials say the expedition can begin in April.

It won't be the first gold recovered from the ship. In 1988, shipwreck enthusiast and Ohio native Tommy Thompson led an expedition that recovered gold worth tens of millions of dollars.

The treasure became the subject of lawsuits involving investors who funded Thompson's expedition and workers who said they weren't properly paid. Thompson has been a wanted fugitive since August 2012.
