CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A no swim advisory was posted at Nance Cove on Mountain Island Lake following a wastewater spill on Tuesday.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department responded to a broken wastewater pipe in the 8900 block of Callabridge Court on Tuesday.

CMUDsays an estimated 5500 gallons of wastewater overflowed from a manhole and reached Nance Cove.

The pipe was quickly cleared by CMUD workers.

No dead fish were found as a result of the overflow.

A no swim advisory was put into effect, but was lifted on Monday.

CMUD lifted the advisory now that levels of fecal coliform bacteria in the water have fallen below levels deemed to be safe for swimming.

Rusty Rozzelle, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services Water Quality program manager, said the advisories are standard procedure.

It was necessary to close the areas to recreation because of the potential risk to human health. That s because Mountain Island Lake is designated as recreational waters, said Rozzelle.
