MANSFIELD A 17-year-old Kings Mountain teen who drowned in a family s pond Monday afternoon in Ohio has been identified as William James Dawson.

Dawson was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m. by the Richland County Coroner s office. He had been underwater for an estimated 40 minutes, Richland County Sheriff Maj. Joe Masi said.

He was unresponsive when members of the dive team pulled him from the water around 2:02 p.m. at 182 Timmerman Road, Masi said. He was found 18 feet below the surface, he said.

The water temperature was reported to be around 55 degrees.

It was very difficult to find him, Masi said. (The pond is) 200 yards by 200 yards it s pretty circular, but there s varying depths, anywhere from the shallow part down to 21 feet.

Dawson was swimming with his 18-year-old sister and another woman, reported to be 18 and six months pregnant, around 1 p.m. when he went under, Masi said.

He started to panic, Masi said. (His sister) tried to rescue him and was unable to.

The siblings were said to be visiting from Kings Mountain, North Carolina. He had swum in his great-grandparents pond many times before, Masi said.

An emergency medical helicopter landed at the home but did not transport anyone, Masi said. The teen s body remained in the emergency squad, he said.

The squad immediately worked on the person and we had called for Life Flight as well, Masi said. They worked vigorously on him.
