CHINA GROVE, N.C. -- A doctor allegedly behind a Rowan County prescription drug scheme has turned himself into police.
Dr. Orrin Walker is accused of writing more than 200 illegal prescriptions for hydrocodone. He was taken into custody Thursday afternoon.
Teachers and employees of the Rowan School district were booked into the Rowan County Justice Center Wednesdayafter allegedly obtaining prescription pills illegally and giving them to an area doctor.
Crystal Maness surrendered and Wednesda.y Abby Walker, Meredith Raynes and Tammy Eudy, all of whom worked at Bostian Elementary school, came forward also. Also Teresa Seagroves, an administrative assistant at McKnight School in Kannapolis, turned herself into police.
The China Grove Police Department tells NBC Charlotte Alisha Beaver Christian and Summer Knight Thomason are also expected to turn themselves in on Thursday. Those who surrendered had no comment about their charges.
China Grove Police say Abby Walker sought out coworkers and friends to assist the couple in the scheme. Investigators allege the other suspects agreed to use their names for prescriptions, and they would pick up, pay for and deliver the pills to the Walkers. Dr. Walker would call in the prescriptions with the names, police say, without having a medical relationship with the suspects.
