CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A fire broke out an apartment complex in east Charlotte on Thursday morning.

The fire broke out at an apartment complex in the 6500 block of Monroe Road around 10:30 a.m.

Heavy smoke can be seen coming from the apartment complex. Firefighters on the scene worked to contain the fire.

Medic has not reported any injuries.

The American Red Cross says families from two apartments are affected by the morning blaze.

A total of 15 people, five adults and 10 children, require food, shelter and clothing. The Red Cross is working to assist the families.
