Matthews Alive One of the most popular festivals in the area, Matthews Alive always takes place Labor Day Weekend. You ll want to carry some spending money, of course, but there are plenty of free kids activities and a parade, as well as a full band schedule that won t cost you a dime. And the dimes and dollars that you do spend go toward funding area non-profits. It runs Friday 6pm to 10:30pm, Saturday 9am to 9pm, Sunday 12pm to 9pm, and Monday 9am to 5pm.

Free movie in Harrisburg Park How to Train Your Dragon Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy How To Train Your Dragon on a big screen at Harrisburg Park at 8pm. Come early because once the park reaches capacity nobody else will be admitted. Not just the movie is free. There will also be free soft drinks and popcorn. Italian Ice will be sold for $1 as a fundraiser, and Main Street Deli will be selling pizza for $5.

Gallery Crawls Both NoDa and the Historic South End hold free gallery crawls on the first Friday of the month, which is this Friday, September 2nd. At the NoDa Gallery Crawl, there is free music at The Evening Muse and an All Arts Market at Neighborhood Theatre. At the South End, there s a free shuttle to take you between the different galleries.

Labor Day Celebration at U.S. National Whitewater Center The U.S. National Whitewater Center is putting on a Labor Day Party on Sunday starting at 4pm. Several bands will be playing, including Steep Canyon Rangers, the bluegrass band that Steve Martin has toured with. After the concerts there will be a fireworks display over the whitewater channel. There is a $5 parking charge.

Free Paddle Day at Latta Plantation Nature Center On Sunday from 1pm to 4pm, Latta Nature Center will give everyone a chance to kayak or canoe. Everything will be provided: the boats, equipment, and instruction. Enjoy beautiful Mountain Island Lake.
