LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- Wet roads are believed to have been a factor in a Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy crash early Wednesday morning.

Deputy James Owens lost control of a patrol car and hit a utility pole just after 12 a.m. Wednesday while responding to a break-in call at the Hampton's BP in the 2500 block of Reepsville Road.

Officials said they believe Owens hit a pool of water on the highway while it was raining, hydroplaned and then ran off the road near the Lincolnton Water Plant on Reepsville Road.

Owens was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln with a head laceration.

The collision split the pole requiring Duke Energy workers to respond to the scene. The patrol car is believed to be a total loss, the report stated.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
