CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A growing chorus of Civil Rights Groups are calling for charges to be upgraded in the case against Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Randall Kerrick.

The 27-year-old officer is accused of gunning down former Florida A&M football player Jonathan Ferrell last Saturday morning.

Kerrick is facing a charge of voluntary manslaughter; John Barnette of Thug Ministries believes it should be murder.

So today we ask that you upgrade the charges, we re not asking we re demanding, He said at a Friday afternoon press conference.

Barnette says his group True Healing Under God plans to pressure the Attorney General who now has the case.

We do plan to send e-mails and petition the Attorney General.

He would also like to see the police have more oversight and has partnered with Matt Newton who has been fighting to give the citizens review board some teeth.

We have a board that by everybody's explanation is ineffective at best, it's high time we did something about that, said Newton.

They are calling for a large crowd to come to the Government Center Monday morning at 11:45 for a City Council Public Safety Committee Meeting.

We're asking everybody to please show up in Room 280 and have our voices heard, let city council know how we feel, he said.

The groups are also calling for the Police Department to release dash cam video of the incident.

I believe that there in that video is where the truth lies and that's what needs to be exposed, they showed Rodney King being beaten so today we ask they show the video, said Barnette.

The group hopes to hold a vigil for Ferrell next week at the same hour as his funeral in Florida.
