MINERALSPRINGS, N.C. -- A Union County man is hospitalized with life threatening injuries following an attack by an unknown assailant outside of a gas station.

Deputies with the Union County Sheriff's Office responded to the Marathon gas station in the 5900 block of Waxhaw Highway right at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

When officers arrived on the scene, an 18-year-old male victim was receiving treatment by medical personnel for multiple stab wounds.

The victim reported that he was attacked outside the store, by a man who was unknown to him, and stabbed repeatedly.

Witnesses said the man fled southbound on Potter's Road, and were able to provide law enforcement with a description of the suspect and the suspect vehicle.

Shortly thereafter, a vehicle matching the description given at the crime scene was located, parked at a residence in the 4700 block of Crow Road.

Matthew Daniel Gatewood, 29, was determined to be the suspect in the stabbing. Gatewood was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury.

Gatewood was booked in to the Union County Jail under a $150,000 bond.

The Sheriff's Office says Gatewood is currently under supervised probation for another unprovoked attack and stabbing of a stranger at the WalMart in Wadesboro in 2010.

The motive for the attack is unclear, officials say.

The victim, who has not been identified, remains hospitalized at Carolinas Medical Center.
