CONCORD, N.C. -- NBA star Shaquille O'Neal will try out his racing skills Wednesday, taking on NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Concord Speedway.

I'm one of those couch potato guys that says, 'Oh, what Dale does is easy. Anybody can sit in a car, throw on a seatbelt and race at 100, 200 mph,' O'Neal said on Tuesday. But it took me 25 to get in the car. It took me 15 minutes to get out of the car. So I have a newfound respect.

He challenged me to not only a race but five shots at the foul line, Earnhardt Jr. said. And I thought I had him, man. But he started turning his skills on at the end.

The head-to-head race will begin at 5 p.m. It was originally scheduled for 4, but event organizers said they were pushing it back because of the heat. The high temperature Wednesday is forecast for 97.

Gates to the event open at 3 p.m.

The race will air on the new season of the television show Shaq Vs. In previous episodes, O'Neal has faced off against Albert Pujols in a homerun-hitting contest, Michael Phelps in a swimming race, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh in beach volleyball, and Oscar de la Hoya in a boxing match.
