GASTONIA, N.C. -- Helping Hands: By Helping Others, We Help Ourselves -- This is the theme chosen by the Gastonia-Piedmont Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, for their 2011 Children s Cluster, a day of celebration, community pride and learning to be held at Piedmont Community Charter School, Secondary School Campus, 2970 South New Hope Road, Gastonia, NC.

Members of the Mid-Atlantic region of the organization will gather in Gastonia for a day of creativity, interactive learning, networking activities and building self-esteem, especially designed for children age four to 12. Nearly three-hundred children and parents will be in attendance. Local police officers, firemen and EMTs will be on hand to teach children valuable lessons about service and safety. Special guest and Gastonia-native James Worthy will be honored with the group s Helping Hand award in honor of the work he s done in Gastonia and North Carolina through the James Worthy Foundation (

In addition, children s book author Kelly Starling Lyons, of Raleigh, will be reading from her picture book, One Million and Me. (

Not only will the group get the children moving with exercise classes by the Gaston County YMCA, moms on hand will get to participate in Zumba class taught by Gaston county native, Jonathon Logan of Live Fit Health Club (, while the dads get vocal during a panel entitled, From Scouts to Soccer to Dance -- Coaching Your Kids and Keeping Your Cool. Panelists will include: Seth Bennett, VP of market development for the Charlotte Bobcats; former NBA star (and Gastonia native) Eric Sleepy Floyd; veteran award-winning basketball coach Butch Blalock; Jarrette Brathwaite, Executive Director of the Gaston United Soccer Club. Mark W. Wright, Editorial Director of Content for ESPN Regional TV, will moderate the panel.
