CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Federal regulators are giving conditional approval to the Duke and Progress Energy merger.

The companies now have 60 days to explain how they would protect competition in the Carolinas.

Officials say -- remedies could include selling off power plants or building new transmission lines among other things.

Critics of the deal will also get 30 days to comment on the proposals. The companies also need to get approval from North Carolina regulators.
