CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Walmart is celebrating the grand opening of their new east Charlotte supercenter store on Independence Boulevard Wednesday.

The new store employs 400 people and 250 of those are brand new jobs. Most of those people are ready to finally open the new store.

This is my first grand opening and I'm excited about it, because I never been to one before, so I wanted to see and experience what it would be like, Elaine Stephenson said.

This new location replaces the older Walmart on Eastway Drive, and many in the community are looking forward to seeing what this anchor store does for the area.

This is one small step for retail, and one huge step for [east] Charlotte, Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx said druring his ribbon cutting speech. We are coming back here in [east] Charlotte.

In recent years, many local businesses have closed along this stretch of Independence Boulevard, and those with the Eastside Political Action Committee say they're hoping this store acts as an anchor for other local businesses to re-open.

The Walmart store broke ground last March and it was built using energy efficient technology.

The cement flooring, for example, is made with recycled materials and skylights will be used to light more than 75 percent of the building.
