CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers have been cleared of negligence on the night a teenager reportedly tried to strangle herself in the back of a police car.

In December, 18-year-old Tanisha Williams was arrested for shoplifting at a store on Freedom Drive.

Dash cam video from the patrol car was not released to the public, but police said it shows that Williams wrapped a seat belt around her neck and choked herself. She s been in a coma ever since.

CMPD said it has completed its internal investigation. According to the report, police didn't realize what she'd done because it was dark and the way her hair was laying.

Police said that Williams was banging her head on the glass and was trying to strangle herself while officers went to get another restraint. Police added as soon as they realized what Williams was doing, they cut her out and got her medical attention.

The attorney for Williams family told NewsChannel 36 they plan to move forward with a lawsuit against CMPD.
