CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two people were taken to the hospital after a car slammed into a tree early Saturday morning.

The accident happened around 4:15 a.m. along Carmel Road at Rock Canyon Road.

Police say a car was traveling south on Carmel Road when the driver lost control and struck a tree.

One passenger was airlifted to CMC with life- threatening injuries.

The driver was also transported to CMC with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say speed was a factor and are investigating if alcohol was a factor.
