CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Dozens of passengers who were stranded in Charlotte over night Sunday are hoping to make their flight to New York on Monday.

About 140 passengers and crew members spent Sunday night in a hotel here after their plane had some mechanical issues.

Officials say United flight 217 was heading to LaGuardia from Houston Sunday night when it had problems with an engine. The plane had to make an emergency landing at Charlotte Douglas.

NBC Charlotte talked with one of the passengers about what happened.
There were multiple, large-seemingly explosions, said passenger Jay Michael Ryan Chumbley, Then the plane started to hiccup. But the pilot and entire crew was very accommodating, helped us out a lot.

The plane landed safely last night, and United is reimbursing passengers for their hotel stays.
