MORGANTON, N.C. Officials said Monday that seven inches of rain over the weekend caused multiple sewer spills in Morganton.

Over 19,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into Hunting Creek and the Catawba River. Officials said most of the spill was rainwater. The third spill which happened at Morganton s Waste water Treatment Plant is ongoing.

According to officials, the ongoing spill at the waste water plant could total more than a million gallons.

Authorities said the spills started Sunday at Fleming and Cox Street, Pearson Drive, and the Waste water Treatment Plant.

The spills are mostly storm water, said Water Resources Director Brad Boris.

Our residents and water users downstream shouldn't have anything to worry about, he continued in a press release sent to NBC Charlotte.

Officials insisted there was no need for residents to boil their drinking water.
