CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A BMW driver faces additional charges after hitting two other vehicles while speeding through south Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

It happened around 1 a.m. on July 15 in the 15000 block of Johnston Road.

Police say Nicholas Borden, 31, was headed southbound at a high rate of speed when he first struck a Nissan Maxima. Borden then moved to the left lane and rear-ended a Toyota Rav4, according to investigators.

Borden s car went up in flames after the collisions. Crews had to pull him from the vehicle before taking him to the hospital. He has since been released.

He was first charged with DWI. He s now also faces felony serious injury by vehicle and reckless driving charges.

The driver of the Toyota, 37-year-old William Morrison, suffered life-threatening injuries. Police now say he is permanently disabled because of the crash.
