CHESTERCOUNTY, S.C. -- Friends are rallying around a Chester County mother who lost her infant daughter to alleged child abuse last week.

Madison Stewart died Friday of head injuries suffered while being cared for by her mother s boyfriend.

Jeffery Todd Bradley, 27, an Iraq war veteran, is charged in her death. He is in the Chester County jail with no bond.

Madison s mother, Penny Stewart, is devastated, said family friend Jodi Dover. Dover is friends with Stewart s brother, who would watch Madison while her mother worked two jobs to support her.

I was just devastated for Penny, she said. She just wanted a baby for so long, and that was her only baby.

Dover knew there was little she could do to ease Stewart s grief.

It was senseless, she said through tears. I just felt like it was so senseless, so heartless, for him to be that cold.

Knowing a funeral would probably cost too much for a grieving single mom to afford, Dover set up a way for friends and family to help. She set up a page on a fundraising website.

The page on had already raised $2,700 by Sunday night. The goal is $8,000.

Honestly, I just really wish I could do more, said Dover. So do others. She knows the case rests in the hands of the law.

I hope that he gets justice, she said.

But at least she hopes Madison s grieving mom will have one less thing to worry about.
