HIDDENITE, N.C. -- Hiddenite Elementary School in Alexander County was placed under a soft lockdown due to police activity in the area.

Officials tell NBCCharlotte the school went into lockdown just after 11 Tuesday morning due to a nearby bank robbery. Law enforcement are searching for the bank robbery suspect in the vicinity of the campus.

The Alexander County Sheriff's Office says People's Bank was robbed around 10:30 Tuesday. The suspect fled on foot and may be driving a blue 2005 Chevy Silverado truck with NCtags TYX-6269, that was last seen traveling on Old Mountain Road.

The suspect is described as a white male, standing between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11, weighing about 225 pounds with a brown goatee. The suspect was last seen wearing a dark, or possibly black-colored jacket, perhaps leather, blue jeans and a AC/DC hat.

In an earlier version of this story, it was reported that the suspect vehicle was a burgundy Dodge truck. Authorities have since updated that information.

No weapon was displayed during the robbery, the Sheriff's Office says, but the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

School officials say a soft lockdown means everyone stays inside the building, but can move around within the building.

Hiddenite Elementary is located in the 300 block of Sulphur Springs Road in Hiddenite.
