CHARLESTON , N.C. -- An alligator gave shoppers quite the scare in the Charleston area, reports NBC affiliate WMBF.

A crowd gathered around the gator outside of a Verizon store Tuesday evening. Some people captured pictures of the animal.

Witnesses say it was at least 6 feet long. Police blocked it from reaching the street until they could capture the gator, which has been released to a reservoir.
