LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- A 10-year-old boy is recovering after he got caught in the net of a basketball goal and essentially hanged himself.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says they were called to a home in the 2800 block of Long Shoals Road around 9:30 Sunday morning after a call regarding an accidental hanging.

Authorities say the boy had been playing basketball and somehow ended up tangled in the goal's net.

The boy's grandmother spotted him hanging from the goal, which stood some 60-inches off the ground, and called his father for help.

The boy's father ran outside, cut him from the netting and began performing CPR.

The boy was airlifted from the scene to CMCLincoln, and was later taken to CMC Main.

The Sheriff's Office says the boy is stable.
