CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte s homicide rate is at its lowest in a decade, although tying 2011 s number of 17.

City officials compared reports up to June 24 in years dating back to 2004.

Out of this year s 17 homicides, the suspect and victim were know to each other in 14 incidents. Twenty-one homicides were investigated in the same timeframe last year.

Police say 2008 was the deadliest year by June 24 with 38 murders. However, 2005 was the deadliest overall in the last decade.

CMPD says it s taking initiatives to reduce the homicide rate. This includes using a task force in high-crime neighborhoods, targeting repeat violent offenders and working with youth programs.
