MATTHEWS, N.C. Despite the rainfall on Saturday, firefighters in Matthews were able to train with a controlled burn.

The MatthewsVolunteer Fire and EMS Department held a control burn exercise at an old barn which was donated to them. The department chief says when they are fortunate enough to have a donation like this; they really take advantage of it.

Whenever anyone is willing to donate a building for us to use, we try to do a lot of training on it, not just the day that we burn it but throughout the whole month doing different types of evolutions, said Chief Dennis Green of Matthews Fire and EMS.

The controlled burn was on Idlewild Road from 9 a.m. until noon.
