BURKE COUNTY, N.C. -- Newly released search warrants detail a gruesome scene at the Burke County home of two homicide victims.

In the documents, the sheriff s office says no one answered the door at Levi and Rhonda Whisnant s home on Fish Hatchery Road when deputies arrived for a welfare check. They then noticed a reddish brownish substance on one of the porches, as well as a significant amount of the same substance when glancing inside the house through a door, police say. It appeared to be in a drag-like pattern.

The Criminal Investigations Division then arrived on scene and determined the substance was in fact blood. They also say the inside of the house appeared to be in disarray, with clothing and personal belongings scattered on the floor. A struggle appeared to have taken place, according to the search warrants.

Police went inside the home to see if anyone needed medical assistance and say the blood pattern continued. Investigators found a dead woman, Rhonda, at the end of the trail and immediately performed a safety sweep of the house. A dead man, Levi, was found dead inside the basement. Documents say both bodies were decomposing when deputies found them.

After identifying the victims, police quickly began searching for Troy Whisnant, Levi's son and Rhond'a stepson. Police checked his Facebook page, which listed several comments:

Why is it that you take everything in life that you love for granted? I have nothing left and am not in a good place. Please keep me in your prayers.

Am struggling in this cruel world! The best thing about being down is that you can t go anywhere but up!!

I have the best father IN the world. I have only ever let him down. He has been there for me every step of the way.

Police say Troy Whisnant, now dead, was charged with multiple violent crimes including first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary and assault on a female.

Before the search warrants were released Friday, police already told NBC Charlotte Troy lived in the house with the bodies for days before the sheriff's office responded.
