For Democrats, this is might be the equivalent of a royal baby on the way: Chelsea Clinton announced Thursday that she's pregnant with her first child.
Chelsea Clinton is pregnant
Marc and I are very excited that we have our first child arriving later this year and I certainly feel all the better, whether it's a girl or a boy, that she or he will grow up in a world full of so many strong female leaders, Chelsea Clinton said in New York City.
The former first daughter, 34, and her mother, Hillary Rodham Clinton, are in New York City hosting a No Ceilings event, a project of the former secretary of State and the Clinton Foundation to evaluate the progress of women and girls.
Former President Bill Clinton and his wife have made no secret of their wish to have a grandchild. It's unclear how Chelsea's pregnancy will affect Hillary Clinton, who is considering a race for president in 2016.
At the 2011 World Economic Forum in Davos, Bill Clinton told that audience: I would like to have a happy wife and she won't be unless she's a grandmother. It's something she wants more than she wanted to be president.
Chelsea Clinton married Marc Mezvinsky, who co-founded Eaglevale Partners, a hedge fund. The couple met as students at Washington's Sidwell Friends school and attended Stanford University together.
In recent months, the mother-to-be has been taking a more active role in the Clinton Foundation and works on the organization's health programs.
Hillary Clinton, who has been leading all early public opinion polling for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, has said she won't decide until next year whether she'll make another White House bid.
But the baby's other grandmother is already on the 2014 ballot. Former congresswoman Marjorie Margolies, Mezvinsky's mother, is running for her old House seat in Pennyslvania.
