CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- On Monday morning road crews will block West Tyvola Road from West Boulevard to Old Steele Creek Road.

The road will be closed until 5 p.m. Friday April 25. Residents will still allowed travel the road but through traffic will not be permitted.

The reason for the closure will be to remove trees as part of the West Tyvola Road sidewalk project. The city moved to have the sidewalks placed along the side of West Tyvola after the deaths of five and one year old brothers in February of 2012.

Kadrien Pendergrass, five, and his one-year-old brother, Jeremy Brewton, were walking with their father when a box truck struck and killed the boys. Their father, who was pushing a stroller with the boy s sister was not hit by the truck.

Yolanda Wakefield had just come home that morning, she said while she is pleased that the project is finally starting, she wishes that sidewalks would have already been in place.

If the sidewalks were put in a little sooner or maybe someone pushed it -- it, you know sooner, that could have been prevented, she said Those children could have grown up and had a life.

The city awarded the project to DOT Construction.
