CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cato Corporation, a company based in Charlotte that runs a chain of womens' fashion stores across the southeast, has now bought the former home of the Charlotte Knights, property records show.
On April 30, the company paid$841,284 for 32 acres of land where the stadium and parking lots now sit. The company had previously bought up 260 acres surrounding it that became available when another developer went bankrupt.
The Charlotte Knights moved to Fort Mill in 1990 and built a 10,000 seat stadium, which they then gave to York County. Under the agreement, the team never paid property taxes while it was in Fort Mill. The Knights moved to Uptown Charlotte this season.
A call to Cato wasn't immediately returned Wednesday morning. The company previously saidit planned to build a distribution center on the land, along with offices, shops and a hotel.
