MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.C. -- A teenage boy is dead after drowning in Tuckertown Lake in late Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say a group of teenagers jumped off a cliff and were holding on to a floating log when Richard Edward Maxwell III, 18, saw a snake. Officials said Maxwell panicked, went under water and never resurfaced.

His friends went back to shore and called 9-1-1. They say he was not a strong swimmer.
Authorities believe the Maxwell was under water for an hour and a half before his body was recovered.

Officials said the area known as The Cliffs is a game lands area reserved only for hunting, fishing and trapping.
