Friend of missing teacher's boyfriend calls him brilliant, charming

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Angelo Grayson Smith is at the center of the Bianca Tanner investigation; the 30-year-old man is facing a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
He allegedly assaulted Tanner in front of her 3-year-old son.
Tuesday afternoon, a friend of his who did not want to be identified told NBC Charlotte that Smith is smart, even brilliant.
He s one of the smartest people I ve ever met, said the friend.
Smith graduated from North Carolina A&T and has a master s degree in industrial engineering.
Tanner s family says she met him at a school function. She has been missing for weeks and police are presuming she is dead.
Smith reported her missing and came in and talked to officers once about the case.
Sources and the friend describe Smith as very self assured, borderline cocky -- the kind of man who doesn t mind telling you what he thinks and doesn t care if you agree with him on not.
Smith s friend also called him charming, not the type of person you would think of as abusive, although his lengthy criminal history of allegedly battering women says otherwise.
As far as the domestic violence related warrant is concerned,Smith has not turned himself into the Mecklenburg County Jail and police still have not heard from him.
