ALBEMARLE, N.C. -- The Albemarle Police Department says a woman posed as a tax preparer in a scheme to fraudulently collect their returns.

Police launched an investigation after several people reported fraudulent activity on the pre-paid debit cards where their tax return was funded.

Albemarle Police say their investigation led them to 44-year-old Leisha Kay Wallace. Authorities say Wallace posed as a licensed tax preparer and would help people complete their tax returns. Then, they say, she would file their online and have the money sent to a pre-paid debit card. The debit card was sent to an address other than the address used on each respective tax return. Wallace would then pull the funds from the card, police say.

Detectives fear there may be more victims. If you may have fallen victim to Wallace's alleged scheme, you're asked to give Detective Cote a call at (704) 984-9526.

Wallace is charged with identity theft, obtaining property by false pretense and financial card theft. She was booked in to jail under a $7500 bond.
