BELMONT, N.C.-- It has been one week since anyone has seen Janet Simpson.

Police do have some clues, but the bad weather stopped the search effort Sunday.

Simpson was last seen leaving the Liberty East restaurant on Independence Boulevard last Sunday.

Then on Thursday her car was found parked along Parkdale Drive near the Catawba River in Belmont.

Belmont police say their work isn't done, but just delayed.

For the third day in a row boat and dive teams have searched the waters of the Catawba River using sonar and side-scan detection devices.

When they get a ping, divers search under the surface, but so far they haven't found anything.

They've also searched the areas around the banks of the river with K-9's and cadaver dogs.

Police say between the restaurant where she was last seen and spot where her car was found in Belmont, there are 2,826 square miles of area to cover.

We are not giving up the search, we are not ruling out that she is not here. It's basically the weather that's prohibiting us today, and if the weather is cleared up tomorrow we will be back in the water and on foot tomorrow, says Capt. Charlie Franklin with the Belmont Police Department.

Police still say they hope she's alive and they'll keep searching for her one way or another.

NewsChannel 36 spoke to her family briefly Sunday afternoon.

They said they have no idea what could have happened to Simpson and it's not like her just to disappear.
