CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte City Council's new curfew rules for children 15 and under go into effect Thursday.

Under the new rules, the curfew depends on age. For kids 12 and under they must be home by 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. seven days a week.

For children 13, 14 and 15 the curfew will be at 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. seven days a week.

These are all the new rules that city council and mayor pro Tem Patrick Cannon pushed through last month to help protect youth and prevent crime.

Cannon said it was important to make the change to the law after a deadly shooting in uptown last may.

The law does not apply to teens who are 16 and 17 years old.
