CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating the mysterious death of a man found in a car that was parked in front of a convenience store southwest of uptown Thursday evening.

It happened in front of Al's Mini Mart on Toomey Avenue, just off Remount Road.

Family and friends of the victim, 31-year-old Yama Fluker, cried openly at the scene.

Fluker's body was found in the front seat of a Chevy Impala that was parked in a space to the left of the front door to the market.

Some customers had gone in and out and saw the man, but had no idea what they were looking at.

I saw him laid back on the seat and I thought he was on the phone, said Danny McFalls who was working nearby and who had stopped at the store with some co-workers.

After someone else saw the body with what appeared to be blood on the face, police were called to the store.

Upon arrival they found a male who was deceased in the vehicle, said Captain Jeff Estes, the commander of the Central Division.

Estes could not say what the apparent cause of death was or say if investigators had any idea what had happened.

Antoinette Davis, who lives nearby, came out to see what was going on and like others, had to watch from behind police crime scene tape.

If you can't get along with a person, I truly believe you should just leave them alone, she said.
