LANCASTERCOUNTY, S.C. -- The man accused in the death of a 5-year-old Lancaster County girl has posted bond.

Phillip Gleason, 27, was released from the Lancaster County Detention Center on Monday after making bail. Gleason's bond was initially denied.

Gleason is accused of killing 5-year-old Soren Chilson, who, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Soren's mother, April Snipes, was at work at the time of incident, when Gleason, her boyfriend, called 911.

NBCCharlotte learned when EMSresponded to Gleason's call, Soren was found soaking wet in the bathroom. Gleason reported to officers that Soren was throwing up, so he splashed water on her.

The Sheriff's Office also says Soren suffered cuts and bruises to her head and arm.

Soren was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

Gleason, a former Winthrop University student, had been living with Soren and her mother for about three months. Winthrop University suspended Gleason following the filing of charges against him.

The Charlotte Observer reports Gleason is a Purple Heart recipient from his time serving in Iraq.

Other than a few traffic tickets in York County, Gleason had no previous criminal record.
