CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Patrick Cannon s resignation as mayor Wednesday means that the City Council must appoint a new Charlotte mayor.

As of now, Pro Tem Michael Barnes will oversee meetings and play role of mayor until a replacement is picked.

The City Council must pick a new mayor who is a resident of the city and a member of the Democratic Party.

The City Council does not have to choose an elected official. The new mayor would serve until December 2015, a month after the next mayoral election.

If the City Council appointed a council member, it would then appoint a replacement for that official.

The job of Charlotte mayor is part-time and other mayors have held outside employment.
