CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A woman is hospitalized with life threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the road late Saturday night.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to the 5200 block of Albemarle Road around 10:30 on reports of a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian.
Police say the woman, 43-year-old Tonia Marie Payne, was attempting to cross Albemarle at the intersection of North Sharon Amity Road when she was struck by an older model white Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The Jeep fled the scene eastbound on Albemarle Road, according to witnesses.
Authorities say the Jeep Grand Cherokee should have damage to the front end, and noted there was no vehicle debris left at the scene.
Payne was crossing the street outside of the crosswalk, police say.
Payne is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center.
According to CMPD, Payne turned 43 on Saturday.
