CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More than 50 puppies rescued from a puppy mill in Rutherford County Thursday are being groomed and pampered at the Charlotte Humane Society.

The dogs were found on three different properties in cages covered in urine and feces. Rescuers say the fur on many of the dogs was matted.

Employees say some of the dogs have to be sedated because the fur is so badly knotted.

More testing will be done on the dogs, including blood tests, to check for heart worms. The Humane Society says it will foster the dogs before putting them up for adoption.
