Two Burke County women are in jail after authorities say they confessed to killing a man whose body was found on a road near Morganton this week.

Darlene Cavanaugh Butler, 53, and her 25-year-old daughter, Jessica Lynn Cavanaugh, are each charged with murder, the Burke County Sheriff s Office said Thursday. Both are being held without bond in the county jail.

The Butlers are charged in the death of 62-year-old Lendon Evan Poteet of Morganton.

Authorities found Poteet s body along Rob Carswell Street around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. Earlier, authorities had responded to a fire at his home then found his burned car in another location. The Sheriff s Office said local and state authorities were investigating all three incidents when they received information that led them to a home on Oakdale Drive near where Poteet s car was found.

The Sheriff s Office did not say what led authorities to the Butlers, who records show live on Rob Carswell Street. But they said the women were interviewed and subsequently confessed to the murder.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Burke County Sheriff s Office at 828-438-5500.
