CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Rescue crews were called out toan accident involvingtwo vehicles and a light rail trainnear the intersection of Remount Road and South Boulevard Wednesday night.
Paramedics told NewsChannel 36 that seven people were taken to local hospitals from the accident. Four were described ashaving seriousinjuries while three more suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Police said that the accident happened justafter 8:30 p.m. when a SUV slammed into the back of a car that was stopped at the rail crossing on Remount. The force of the impact was so strong that the car then hit the side of the light rail train that was passing. The crossing gates were down at the time of the wreck.
CATS spokesperson Jean Leier said that three passengers on the train were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The train's engineer was not hurt but was also taken to the hospitalas standard procedure.
Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the accident.
Just before 11 p.m. the LYNX Blue Line service was back on its regular schedule and operating along the entire 9.6 miles, and the intersection at Remount was reopened.
